This beautiful mask has been carved from a special hardwood tree by an artist from the tribe of Baboun (or Babun) in the form of an elephant and lavishly decorated with white shells.
The Bamun live mainly in the so-called Bamun Plateau in the west of Cameroon, in a fertile grassland of volcanic origin at a height of about 1200 m.
The mask "Elephant King" is used by the Bamoun in Cameroon during the transition of the regency from the father to the son in the throne of royal families.
